Welcome! We’re so glad you’re here. This page is your home base for everything you need to successfully participate in the 2026 ELA Regional Writing Challenge.
Our shared goal is simple: support strong, authentic student writing across Eastern Oregon—together.
The Regional ELA Writing Challenge is a structured, classroom‑friendly writing experience designed to:
Support high‑quality writing instruction
Provide students with an authentic performance task that builds confidence and skill
Celebrate student voice through a regional essay contest
All instructional materials and prompts were developed in collaboration with Yolanda Westerberg and are aligned to best practices in classroom writing instruction.

Challenge Submission Instructions:
Complete the Cover Letter – Fill out all required fields in this cover letter form for each student essay you plan to submit. (available below & in the submission form)
Combine Documents – Print or save the cover letter as the first page, followed by the student essay(in MLA format) and any other documents used in the process, creating a single document.
Upload Submission – Submit the combined cover letter and student essay as one file using the Challenge Submission Form.
Deadline – Ensure all submissions are uploaded before February 28, 2026.
Submission Requirements – Each teacher must submit at least one student essay to complete the challenge and be eligible for educator prizes.
Submission Limits – Each teacher may submit up to 3 student essays per division.
Single Submission – All teacher entries should be submitted at the same time for each division through the Challenge Submission Form.
Submission Window: January 5 – February 28, 2026
Who Can Submit: Teachers may submit up to three student essays per division
Please be sure to follow the submission guidelines when uploading student work and that essays are completed in MLA format.
When participating teachers submit at least one student essay, they will receive:
A full ELA unit plan by Yolanda Westerberg (Grades 6–8 or 9–12, based on your division) by April 15, 2026.
Entry into prize drawings for both teachers and students
Submit at least one student essay using the official submission form to be eligible.
Student winners announced by: April 15, 2026
Winning students and classrooms will receive regional recognition
