Emotional Poverty Keynote: How the Emotional Brain Works

Presented by: Dr. Bethanie Tucker, Aha! Process, Inc. (A Ruby Payne Company)

Bethanie Tucker, Ed.D. of North Carolina has been a professional educator since 1972. She served in a number of critical teaching and program leadership roles at the elementary school level and is currently a professor of education at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. She is an experienced consultant and author for aha! Process, a Ruby Payne company. This keynote address will introduce techniques for teaching students how their brain works, how to recognize emotional triggers, and how to calm themselves down. Topics will be elaborated on during the follow-up full day workshop. In an effort to ensure some social distancing, space will be somewhat limited.

Emotional Poverty Workshop: Reducing Anger, Anxiety & Violence in the Classroom

Morning session will delve into regulation and calming strategies for students as well as what motivates good behavior and why some discipline strategies work while others do not. In the afternoon participants will learn strategies for better results while working with male students (male and female brains). Participants will learn about emotional noise in the classroom and what they can do. The stages of adult development will also be discussed. In an effort to ensure some social distancing, space will be somewhat limited.

Developing Social Skills Each Day (K-12)

Presented by: Michael Sedler, Consultant

This session will explore what social skills are and how to get started teaching them on a daily basis in your classroom. We will explore specific skills, understanding boundaries, and strategies for implementation. If students are not successfully prepared for daily interactions at school, negative behavioral interactions will occur. This will be a fun, interactive session that is appropriate for all grade levels.

Disciplinary Writing Cohort Workshop (6-12)

Presented by: Yolanda Westerberg, Consultant

Teachers of all content areas - join us to continue learning to implement, sustain and celebrate writing in your secondary classroom. This session is intended for Grade 6-12 classroom teachers, administrators, district leaders, instructional coaches/team leaders, special services educators, and EL educators who attended the first foundational session during the 2021 Summer Institute. Registration for this session is by invite only based on pre-requisite attendance at the previous session (participants received a session invitation via Google Calendar). Calling All Secondary Science Educators - NGSS (6-12)

The work of planning and teaching with NGSS in mind is complex and challenging, but when educators work together, they create greater learning opportunities and successes for students. So join with the Frontier STEM Hub and fellow science educators as we collaborate and confer to share expertise, new knowledge, and resources. Come build on existing practices to enhance your instructional toolkit. Be prepared to discuss, share, and lead through this unique interactive experience. Meet colleagues from around the region as you network to gain a deeper understanding and share to reach common goals. In addition, this session will explore Frontier STEM Hub Lending Library resources available for the secondary science classroom. Resources include zSpace AR technology, Vernier tools and software, circuitry kits, and much more.

Pattern Block Power K-6! & Math Fluency (K-6)

Presented by: Steve Wyborney, Ontario SD and Jonathan Brendefur, DMTI Institute

This is a combined session with two presentations focused on elementary math. Pattern Block Power K-6! is a 1-hour session for teachers in grades K-6. Participants who complete this session will receive 4 tubs of pattern blocks for use in their classrooms, courtesy of the Eastern Oregon REN. The session includes instructional strategies to promote higher-order thinking as well as free challenges and puzzles. In addition, participants will learn about the REN's region-wide challenge and find out how their class can participate in the challenge. Tips on how to differentiate instruction while addressing the standards will also be featured. The second part of the session will include a presentation on math fluency by the DMTI Institute. This will primarily focus on Grades 2-6, but will also work to include K-1 educators as well. Please join us in advancing math across our elementary classrooms!

CPR / First Aid Certification (PRE K-12)

Presented by: Corina Perez, Eastern Oregon Child Care Resources

This session will provide CPR and First Aid certification / recertification through the Health & Safety Institute. The training will be repeated 2 times - once in the morning session and once in the afternoon session. Please sign-up for only one session. Space is limited, so we ask that those registering be Pre K-12 educators. Cost is $15 due at the time of registration.

Imagine Learning for Beginners (K-16)

Join us in getting to know language and literacy using Imagine Learning. This session is for new users and will cover everything you need to get started and for successful implementation this year. This session will be offered in hybrid format.

Teaching Holocaust & Genocide SB664 In Middle/High School (6-12)

Presented by: Amanda Coven, Oregon Jewish Museum & Center for Holocaust Education

In this session, educators will be introduced to the learning concepts mandated in the bill, given grade level guidance for how to approach and teach these histories alongside current content standards, and learn about available resources and classroom learning opportunities for teaching this content.

Promoting Positive Social Emotional Development and Preventing Challenging Behavior Through Schedules and Routines (PRE K - 3)

Presented by: Jenna Mejia, Malheur ESD

How can schedules and routines boost engagement and learning in preschool through third grade classrooms? Get immediately useful answers to that question in this session. The presenter will show you how to increase engagement and support children’s learning by taking time to carefully construct a classroom schedule and thoughtfully develop consistent, predictable Routines within Routines within Routines. You’ll learn foundational information about designing successful schedules and routines and get an introduction to some tools you can use to support your efforts.

Nurturing Beginnings for Infants & Toddlers (Foundations) *Virtual*

In this session, participants will overview a few human development theories to provide a foundational understanding of infants and toddlers development. Through reflective activities participants will identify their framework to understand child development in the first three years. This session aims to provide a basic understanding of the many ways we can view the child as they are developing, thus helping inform our practice according to developmental needs. Secondary Math Standards Update & Collaboration (7-12)

Presented by: Mark Freed, ODE / Facilitated by: Erica Jossi, Vale SD

The first hour of this session will focus on an update from ODE regarding the new secondary math standards. This will be followed by collaboration time between secondary math teachers / coaches. Participants must come to this session prepared to share at least one favorite math engagement strategy as well as one (preferably free) loved resource or program, and one question frequently used to elicit more discussion from students. If you need assistance with making copies to assist in sharing with others, please contact Jennifer Martin. This will be a great chance to meet with other math educators to share ideas that will improve student engagement in math across districts.

Overcoming Underachievement Patterns (K-12)

During this session, we will discuss motivational teaching strategies as well as areas of rigor, grit, fixed mindsets, and resilience. Each person will get a better understanding of how to successfully engage resistant students and how to increase each students’ time on task. This is appropriate for all grade levels and will be filled with many intervention approaches.

Teaching Holocaust & Genocide SB664 In Elementary Classrooms (K-5)

Presented by: Amanda Coven, Oregon Jewish Museum & Center for Holocaust Education

When and how is it appropriate to address genocide with elementary students? Rather than students being abruptly exposed to difficult historical information in middle school, elementary educators have an opportunity to usher their students into understanding the complexities of history and humanity with developmentally appropriate materials. In this session, educators will be provided with an overview of the history of the Holocaust, unpack guiding themes and questions co-created with OJMCHE’s elementary Teacher Advisory Board, discuss best practices, and learn about age-appropriate texts and conversations to have with students.

Active Listening, Build Relationships, Solve Problems & Avoid Misunderstandings (Infant/Toddler - 3rd Grade & Up)

Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. How well you listen has a major impact on the quality of your personal and professional relationships. Active listening is when you make a conscious effort to hear and understand people so you get the complete message. In this training, we will investigate the latest research on active listening and then practice several different strategies for applying these listening methods. We will then explore how you can apply active listening skills to support and improve communication with children, parents, specialists and staff. CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) - Restraint Training (K-12)

Presented by: Kelsi Skinner, Malheur ESD

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) training is perfect for primary caregivers, educators, and human service professionals who directly intervene in crisis situations, teaching staff de-escalation techniques as well as restrictive and nonrestrictive interventions. This is an in-person training, with a virtual prerequisite component. Participants will be required to complete an online portion of the training prior to attending. Failure to complete the asynchronous online portion prior to the date of training will cancel you from the class.

Firearm Suicide Prevention & Behavioral Health (K-12)

Presented by: OFSC & Malheur ESD

This is a combined session. The first hour of the session will focus on firearm suicide prevention. This is NOT about gun control. The Oregon Firearm Safety Coalition mission is to prevent firearm suicides through voluntary community-led strategies. In this session the idea is to give Oregon firearm owners the resources, information, and skills to support themselves and their loved ones in preventing suicide. The second part of this session will focus on behavioral health. Please register below for both parts of this session.

Nurturing Beginnings for Infants & Toddlers (Culturally Responsive) *Virtual*

In this session, participants will gain an overview of culture, and the influence it has on our beliefs, values & behaviors. Through self reflective practices, participants will build an awareness of cultural humility practices and culturally responsive policies that can strengthen the children and families and your experience in the early learning setting. This is a continuation of the morning training covering the foundational skills for working with infants and toddlers using positive interactions to promote brain development. This class will cover 3 hours of Human Growth and Development. Space is limited, so please sign-up early. Eligible as ORO Set 1 hours; 3hours of CKC: DIV

SWIVL Webinar & Hands-On Workshop (K-12) *Virtual*

Presented by: SWIVL

PART 1: Swivl Training Webinar (12:30-1:30 P.M. Mountain) is a 60 minute overview of the Swivl system, customized for educators. This session includes robot setup, recording, live streaming, and Teams by Swivl Pro features. Robot Kits are not required at this session, but attendees are encouraged to bring the kit so they can handle the components during training.

PART 2: Swivl Foundations (1:45 - 3:15 P.M. Mountain) is a hands-on virtual PD session focused on the basics of using the Swivl Robot and Teams by Swivl software. Attendees will receive personalized interactive training with the opportunity to physically practice with their robots and ask questions. This will be a small group session (15 max) for hands-on activities and troubleshooting. The session is delivered remotely but with everyone interacting with their Swivl kit components. Whenever possible, each participant should attend the virtual session from their own classroom or work space. This allows everyone to keep their mics on and ask questions quickly during the session.

Please note you will need to register for each part of the session separately.

ELA Standards, Pathway to Proficiency & Balanced Assessment System (3-12)

Presented by: Tony Bertrand & Tina Roberts, ODE

The first section of the session will focus on relaunching the 2019 English Language Arts (ELA) standards while exploring pathways to proficiency (PTP). The second section of the session will focus on summative, interim, and formative assessments as part of the new Balanced Assessment System. Participants need to print grade-level standards and PTP documents to bring to this session. This will be a hybrid session with participants in-person and presenters online. Space is limited.
